Current Demand of Perfume Oils in Different Industries
Perfume oils are manufactured oils developed to impart a pleasant scent. The actual perfume elements and extracts in oil fragrances are far more concentrated than those of standard alcohol-based Eau de toilettes and perfumes and what makes them different is that the perfume oils owing to their strong strength of smell make them last longer. With an alcohol-based scent, evaporation takes place quickly and different scent notes are sent across time. Perfume oils generate the scent constantly. In ancient times, perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants with the process of pressing and steaming. Mankind has always been fond of enhancing or masking their body odour and emanate the signature aroma they wish to define their personality with. Perfume oils are more moisturizing and soft on the skin befitting the modern trend of keeping it fragrant and long-lasting.
Perfume Oils are natural plant-derived essences and the plant substances which are harvested all around the world are brought together to the manufacturing center. There are several methods of oil extraction like steam distillation, solvent extraction, enfleurage, maceration, and expression.
Steam Distillation encompasses that the steam is passed through the plant material in a still state where the oil turns into a gas. Boiling is another option used instead of steaming especially where flower petals are used. This gas is further cooled through tubes to get it liquefied.
Solvent extraction is a procedure where flowers are put into rotating tanks and benzene or a petroleum ether is poured over the flowers, extracting the oil from them. Parts of the flower get dissolved and leave behind a waxy residue which is put in the ethyl alcohol. The oil just dissolves in the alcohol and rises. When heat is dissipated to evaporate the alcohol, it leaves a high concentration of perfume oil at the bottom.
In Enfleurage, flowers are spread on greasy glass sheets. Being placed amongst wooden frames flowers are placed till the grease absorbs the fragrance. Maceration is something similar to Enfleurage with the only difference that the warmed fats extract the flower smell. The warmed fats are dissolved in the alcohol to obtain the perfumed oil.
The Expression is yet another ancient and simpler method where the plant is manually pressed till all the oil is squeezed out.
Once the perfume oils are all accumulated, blending skillfully requires a formula, by a master in this field called the 'nose' and it may take many years to develop a scent formula.
