All About Processing of Perfume Oils for Industrial Needs

With increasing needs, Perfume oils have attained importance in industries with perfumery industries being the most foremost. Perfume oils are fragrance components manufactured to impart a pleasant scent. The actual perfume elements and extracts in oil fragrances are far more concentrated than those of standard alcohol-based Eau de toilettes and perfumes, this is what makes them different from other perfumery elements.

With an alcohol-based scent, evaporation takes place quickly and different scent notes are sent across time thereby increasing the demand for perfume oils owing to their strong smell which makes them last longer.

Mankind has always been fond of enhancing or masking their body odour & emanate the signature aroma they wish to define their personality with one or the other means. Perfume oils seem to be the perfect choice for fulfilling the masking requirements. In ancient times, perfumes were made by extracting natural oils from plants by the process of pressing and steaming. Perfume oils are known to have a soft & soothing effect on the skin, thereby befitting the modern trend of keeping oneself fragrant and long-lasting.

Processing Methods of Perfume Oil

Perfume Oils are essences derived naturally or synthetically depending upon the variation needed by the industry for purpose. The substances used are either 100% Pure & Natural or Reconstitutions prepared by various techniques. Later on, they undergo the different methods at the manufacturing center. There are several known techniques that undergo perfume oils extraction process like steam distillation, solvent extraction, enfleurage, maceration, and expression.

Steam Distillation

Steam Distillation encompasses that the passing of steam through the plant material in a still state where the oil turns into a gas. Boiling is another option used instead of steaming especially where flower petals are used. This gas is further cooled through tubes to get the perfume oils liquefied.

Solvent Extraction

Solvent extraction is a procedure where substances like flowers are put into rotating tanks and chemicals like benzene or petroleum ether is poured over to extract oil from them. Parts of the substances get dissolved and leave behind a waxy residue which is then put into ethyl alcohol. The oil easily gets dissolved in the alcohol and rises. When heat is dissipated to evaporate the alcohol, it leaves a high concentration of perfume oil at the bottom.

Enfleurage

In Enfleurage, flowers are spread on greasy glass sheets. Being placed amongst wooden frames flowers are placed till the grease absorbs the fragrance. Maceration is something similar to Enfleurage with the only difference that the warmed fats extract the flower smell. The warmed fats are then dissolved in the alcohol to obtain the perfumed oil.

Expression

An expression is yet another ancient and simpler method where the plant is manually pressed till all the oil is squeezed out.

Once the perfume oils are all accumulated, they are then blended by skilled & experienced professionals. As a matter of fact, many a time it may take many years to develop a scent formula.
