Tonka Absolute is described as a semi-solid or crystalline mass with a pale amber or pale brownish-yellow color.
It has a very rich, sweet and warm odor that is distinctly coumarinic-herbaceous with prune-like or caramellic-sweet undertones.
The tobacco-like description can be confusing because tonka tincture has been used extensively in the flavoring of cured tobacco leaves.
The absolute contains about 20 to 45% coumarin, yet the overall effect of a true tonka absolute goes beyond the coumarin content alone.
Its complex natural character explains its continued use nearly a century after synthetic coumarin appeared in the perfume and flavor market.
It is used as a fixative and nonfloral sweetener that introduces warm notes in chypres, fougères, new mown hay bases, lavender bouquets and Oriental bases.
It blends well with lavender, lavandin, clary sage, flouve, phenylacetates, salicylates, cinnamates, styrax products, heliotropine, bergamot, oakmoss products, geranyl esters, citronellyl esters and menthyl esters.
Tonka “beans” are seeds from the fruits of Dipteryx odorata and related species growing mainly in western and northeastern South America, especially Venezuela, the Guianas and Brazil.
The tree also grows in Nigeria, West Africa, but bean production there has been irregular and remains unimportant for export.
The seed is removed from the ripe fruit, dried, then soaked in alcohol or rum for 12 to 24 hours before further processing.
After soaking, the seeds swell and then shrink on drying, forming a crystalline frosting of coumarin on the surface, which serves partly as curing and partly as a conventional sales-promotion process.
