Agarwood, also known as oud or agar, is a dark resinous heartwood that develops in Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees when they become infected by mould, causing the tree to produce a dense aromatic resin within the wood.
Aquilaria and Gyrinops trees are large evergreen species native to Southeast Asia, where agarwood formation occurs after natural infection.
The resin-embedded heartwood is known by names such as gaharu, jinko, aloeswood, agarwood and oud, and is widely valued for incense and perfume use.
First-grade agarwood is among the most expensive natural raw materials because of its rarity, complex aroma and cultural significance.
Oudh oil is obtained through distillation of agarwood and its price varies depending on purity and quality.
The global agarwood market is estimated between US$ 6–8 billion and continues to grow rapidly.
Although seventeen species exist, A. malaccensis has been historically dominant, with A. crassna and A. sinensis also commonly harvested.
The Indian subcontinent was once the main source, but due to scarcity, extraction expanded to Indochina and later to Indonesia and Malaysia.
Plantations now exist in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Laos, Myanmar, Papua New Guinea, Thailand and Vietnam.
They grow on a wide range of soils including sandy conditions, establish best in moist shade during early growth and can tolerate full sun as mature trees.
The trees grow 6–20 meters tall, with alternate leaves, yellowish-green flowers in umbels and woody capsule fruits.
The scent is extremely complex and cannot easily be defined, combining animalic, mossy, woody, forest-like and lingering moist tonalities.
It is often combined with rose, patchouli and sandalwood along with a touch of saffron to create a traditional mukhallat-style blend.
