Oakmoss, also known as Evernia prunastri, is a species of lichen found in temperate forests throughout the Northern Hemisphere, including parts of France, Portugal, Spain, North America, and Central Europe.
Oakmoss is primarily harvested in South-Central Europe and exported to the Grasse region of France. It grows on the trunks and branches of oak trees, but it is also found on other deciduous trees and conifers, such as fir and pine. The harvesting process involves collecting the moss from the trees after it naturally grows on them.
Oakmoss thalli are short (3–4 cm in length), bushy, and grow together in large clumps. The thalli are flat and strap-like, resembling the form of deer antlers. They range in color from green to a greenish-white when dry and dark olive-green to yellow-green when wet. The texture is rough when dry and rubbery when wet.
Oakmoss is widely used in perfumery as a fixative, adding a delicate, forest-like, rich, and earthy aroma to fragrance compositions. It is essential in Fougère and Chypre class perfumes, where it forms the base notes and contributes to the longevity of the fragrance.
Oakmoss has a complex odor, described as woody, sharp, and slightly sweet. Oakmoss growing on pine trees has a turpentine-like smell, which is highly valued in specific perfume compositions.
Oakmoss acts as a fixative, improving the longevity of perfumes and lending a natural, damp, creamy-soft trail. It stabilizes the scent profile by holding the more volatile top and middle notes, making the fragrance last longer.
Oakmoss blends exceptionally well with floral, green, and woody notes. It is particularly useful in creating long-lasting bases for fragrances and is known to balance and enhance other ingredients, making the overall scent smoother and more stable.
The primary challenge in using Oakmoss is its association with skin sensitization concerns, which has led to restrictions in certain regions. Additionally, the strong animalic, musky scent of Oakmoss can be overpowering if not balanced properly with other fragrance notes.
Oakmoss extract can be obtained through solvent extraction or vacuum distillation methods. The solvent-extracted Oakmoss is dark green or brown in color and has a strong, earthy, mossy scent with a slight leather undertone.
Historically, Oakmoss was used in fragrances in ancient times. It was an essential part of the development of Fougère fragrances, along with Lavender and Geranium, forming the backbone of this popular family of perfumes.
