Geranium is a genus of 422 species of flowering annual, biennial and perennial plants commonly known as cranesbills, found in temperate regions worldwide and mountainous tropical areas, particularly the eastern Mediterranean.
Geranium species occur across temperate regions and tropical mountains, with strong presence in the eastern Mediterranean region.
They have long palmately cleft leaves that are broadly circular and flowers with five petals coloured white, pink, purple or blue, often showing distinctive veining.
They can be propagated through semiripe cuttings in summer, by seed, or by division during autumn or spring, and they grow in most soils as long as waterlogging is avoided.
The term “geranium” is also used for Pelargonium species, which belong to the same Geraniaceae family and are often grown as bedding plants.
Linnaeus originally placed all species in one genus, but Charles L’Héritier separated them into Geranium and Pelargonium in 1789.
Some former members are now classified under the genus Erodium, including plants known as filarees in North America.
Geranium flowers have five similar petals forming radial symmetry, while pelargonium flowers have two upper petals differing from the three lower ones, creating a single plane of symmetry.
Scientists from Helmholtz Zentrum München identified South African geranium extracts as potential anti-HIV-1 agents for AIDS treatment research.
It may assist with acne, bruises, burns, cuts, dermatitis, eczema, hemorrhoids, lice, mosquito repelling, ringworm, ulcers, breast engorgement, edema, circulation issues, sore throat, tonsillitis, PMS, menopausal problems, stress and neuralgia.
The oil has a pleasant, captivating and long-lasting aroma and is widely used as a deodorant for regulating perspiration and reducing body odor.
It acts as a versatile foundation that balances floral freshness with earthy depth, helping create harmonious floral and woody fragrance profiles.
Its subtle yet captivating aroma complements many essential oils, improves complexity and longevity and ensures consistency across different formulations.
It is widely used in perfumers’ laboratories for both luxury perfumes and everyday fragrance products.
It is regarded as one of the most important essential oils, often present in multiple varieties and valued as a powerful floralizer with flexible usage.
