Siberian pine needle oil, truly a fir oil, is steam distilled from the twigs and needles of Abies Sibirica, a tree that grows abundantly in the northeastern parts of the U.S.S.R. and Mongolia and has also been introduced into several European countries.
Production mainly comes from the U.S.S.R., while smaller amounts are produced in Tyrol (Austria), Germany, Poland, Sweden and occasionally Norway, with cultivation also introduced in Finland.
Siberian Fir Needle Oil is considered the most popular type of fir needle oil in Europe and is also one of the most popular in the United States.
The oil appears as a colorless to very pale yellow or pale olive-yellow oily liquid that may sometimes be turbid or opalescent.
It has a refreshingly balsamic scent that is slightly fatty or oily, with a powerful pine-forest odor and a peculiar fruity-balsamic undertone.
Production is estimated at several hundred metric tons annually, but accurate figures are difficult due to the presence of adulterated or artificial oils sold under the same name.
The majority of genuine material originates from the U.S.S.R., making exact production statistics difficult to determine.
The oil contains about 40% bornyl acetate along with various terpenes, and compounds such as camphene, myrcene and phellandrene may contribute more to the fragrance than pinene, which was once considered the main monoterpene.
Bisabolene contributes to balsamic sweet drydown notes, trace aliphatic aldehydes like dodecanal add freshness, and compounds related to larixinic acid provide a balsamic, jam-like fruity sweetness.
The presence of dodecanal is considered surprising but characteristic of the odor of Siberian pine needle oil.
It blends well with other pine or fir oils, amylsalicylate, coumarin, oakmoss products, nitromusks, diphenyl oxide, citrus oils, rosemary oil, juniper berry oil, labdanum extracts, patchouli oil and lavandin oil.
Its unique odor profile and aldehydic topnote make it suitable for use in unconventional fragrance creations.
