Cananga Oil is water-distilled from the flowers of Cananga Odorata (forma macrophylla) primarily in the northern and western regions of Java, Indonesia. While there are several grades of Java Cananga Oil, all are distilled using the direct-fire method, where flowers are submerged in water and heated directly over a fire without a heating jacket. This method is also employed for a significant portion of ylang-ylang oil production in Nossi-Bé and the Comoro Islands, although it is not used in Réunion.
Despite Cananga Oil being a "complete oil," the yield from Java is notably lower compared to the ylang-ylang oil produced in the Comoros and Nossi-Bé. The reduced yield is attributable to primitive distillation techniques and the use of poorly selected flower material. Additionally, the cananga flowers are often crushed during packing in the still, in contrast to ylang-ylang flowers, which remain intact. This is significant because the delicate flowers can easily lose their fragrance when damaged.
Since World War II, the production of Cananga Oil in Java has surged, while production in the Philippines-once the primary home of the ylang-ylang tree—has diminished significantly.
Java cananga oil is a yellow to orange-yellow or slightly greenish-yellow, somewhat viscous liquid with a sweet-floral, balsamic, and tenacious aroma. Its initial notes are woody-leathery with a fresh-floral undertone—a distinctive combination. The scent profile is notably "heavier" and more long-lasting compared to the first and second grades of ylang-ylang oil.
Cananga oil is particularly valuable in soap perfumery and for creating the popular "leathery" notes in men's fragrances. It blends well with ingredients like castoreum, calamus, rectified birch tar oil, cyclamal, creosol, copaiba oil, isobutyl cinnamate, isoeugenol, labdanum products, guaiacwood oil, nerol, para-cresyl salicylate, oakmoss products, as well as fougère and violet bases. The superior stability and tenacity of cananga oil's aroma make it highly suitable for soap perfumes, where ylang-ylang oil holds comparatively less value.
