The Blue Lotus plant originally grew along the Nile River and other regions of East Africa. Over time, it spread to the Indian subcontinent and Thailand, where it became known for its striking appearance and fragrant flowers.
The leaves of Blue Lotus are broadly rounded and measure about 25–40 cm across with a notch at the leaf stem. The flowers are approximately 10–15 cm in diameter and display pale bluish-white, sky-blue, or mauve petals that gradually turn pale yellow at the center.
The buds rise to the water surface over two to three days. When ready, they open around 9–9:30 am and close again around 3 pm without sinking beneath the water at night.
Blue Lotus flowers frequently appear in Egyptian carvings and paintings, including those on the walls of the temple of Karnak. The flower was associated with celebrations, dancing, and spiritual rites including the symbolic passage into the afterlife.
In modern culture, Blue Lotus flowers are used in preparations such as teas, wines, and herbal infusions. Blue Lotus tea is often prepared by boiling whole flowers for 10–20 minutes, while other recipes involve soaking the petals to release their aromatic properties.
Nymphaea caerulea, commonly known as Blue Lotus, has been associated with mild relaxing and sedative properties. Historically it may have been used ceremonially in ancient cultures for its calming and aromatic effects.
Nymphaea caerulea is distantly related to Nelumbo nucifera, commonly known as the Sacred Lotus. Both plants contain natural alkaloids such as nuciferine and aporphine that contribute to their aromatic and biological properties.
Blue Lotus has been used since ancient times in perfume making due to its calming aroma and symbolic cultural significance. Its fragrance was valued in both Egyptian and South Asian perfumery traditions.
Blue Lotus can be used directly in fragrance compositions to create a delicate floral aroma. It blends well with ingredients such as Lyral, Lilial, Hydroxycitronellal, and Hedione, where it acts as a floral enhancer in complex perfume accords.
Blue Lotus works particularly well in floral, oriental, and aquatic fragrances. It adds softness, elegance, and a slightly aquatic floral note that enhances the overall fragrance composition.
